NLNG Train 7 Workers Protest “Illegal” Monthly Tax Deductions

BONNY, RIVERS STATE — Workers at the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Train 7 project have staged a protest in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State over alleged irregular tax deductions running into millions of naira.

The demonstration, which began with fitters and welders under Daewoo Contractors before spreading to other junior staff, centered on claims that each worker has been subjected to monthly tax deductions of about N150,000 for the past two years without corresponding remittances to the government.

Despite the deductions, the aggrieved staff allege they have not been issued their Tax Identification Numbers (TINs). An audit reportedly uncovered that the funds deducted were never remitted to the Federal Government.

The protesting workers are now demanding the immediate release of their TINs as well as a full refund of the deductions made over the last two years.

A pipe welder, who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, said the protest, which began on Monday, was triggered by the company’s refusal to respond to repeated calls for clarification.

He disclosed that although management had asked the workers to appoint representatives for dialogue, none of the resolutions reached during those talks had been implemented.

Adding to the tension, some protesters accused their union of compromising on the matter, alleging that leaders had been aware of the deductions for two years but kept silent because they benefited from the “illegal taxation.”
