Wike Approves Promotion of 49 Deputy Directors

JUST IN: Wike dissolves cabinet, sacks Chief of Staff

ABUJA — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the elevation of 49 Deputy Directors to the rank of Director across various departments of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The promotion followed the results of the first-ever computer-based promotion examination organized by the FCT Civil Service Commission. The exercise, held on August 12, 2025, at the National Open University, Duste-Alhaji Centre in Bwari Area Council, marked a major shift toward technology-driven assessments in the FCTA.

In a statement issued Tuesday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister, the promotion was designed to clear the backlog of staff on Grade Level 16 awaiting advancement between 2023 and 2025.

Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Eze, explained that the 49 successful officers would occupy part of the 63 vacancies available across different cadres.

He noted that the Education Officer cadre recorded the highest number of promotions, with 20 slots secured, followed by the Accountant cadre with nine. Other cadres, including Civil Engineers, Social Welfare Officers, Tourism, Fisheries, and Medical Officers, had just one vacancy each.

Eze further revealed that the Education cadre attracted the largest competition, with 820 eligible officers vying for only 20 positions, while the Admin cadre had 12 candidates battling for 10 slots.

Wike had earlier directed that the promotion exercise be conducted through a transparent and technology-driven process, prompting the adoption of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) system, with a 60 percent benchmark set as the pass mark.

The promotion exercise is seen as a bold step toward reforming the FCTA’s civil service and ensuring merit-based career growth for its workforce.
