NSCDC Urges Abia Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Relocate Amid Imminent Flood Threat

Umuahia, August 2, 2025 — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a strong advisory to residents of Abia State living in flood-prone communities, urging them to relocate to safer areas ahead of forecasted severe flooding expected to begin this August.

The warning was conveyed in an official statement released by the Abia State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Doreen Udugwu.

Commandant Aderemi cited predictions from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), both of which indicated the likelihood of significant flooding in several parts of the state as part of their 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO).

“In line with our mandate to safeguard lives and respond to natural disasters, we are urging residents in high-risk flood areas to take immediate precautionary measures and, where necessary, relocate to safer grounds,” Aderemi stated.

To ensure preparedness and enhance public awareness, the NSCDC Abia Command has activated its Disaster Management Unit and directed area commanders and divisional officers to carry out sensitisation campaigns across all 17 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

“These sensitisation efforts are focused on educating communities on the dangers of flooding and equipping them with the knowledge needed to mitigate risks. We remain committed to the protection of lives and property in Abia State,” the commandant affirmed.

According to the 2025 AFO, nine local government areas in Abia State have been identified as high-risk zones. These are Aba North, Isiala Ngwa North, Isuikwuato, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Arochukwu.

The NSCDC urged community leaders, residents, and local authorities to collaborate in disseminating vital information and facilitating early evacuation in vulnerable areas.
