WAFCON 2024 Final: Tinubu Sends Presidential Delegation to Morocco, Rallies Super Falcons for Historic Tenth Title

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-powered presidential delegation to Rabat, Morocco, to support the Super Falcons as they battle host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

In a message of solidarity, the President affirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering support for the national women’s football team, who are aiming for a record-extending tenth continental title.

“Tonight, you stand at the cusp of history as you face the host nation,” Tinubu said in a statement to the team ahead of Saturday night’s clash at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. “Your performance throughout this tournament has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength.”

Highlighting the team’s character both on and off the pitch, Tinubu praised the Falcons for their show of empathy during the tournament, notably their visit to Gabriela Salgado of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana following the semi-final match.

“That simple act of compassion reflects our shared humanity and sisterly affection, which we Africans hold in high regard,” the President said.

Commending the team’s unbeaten run and dominance in the knockout stages, Tinubu declared, “If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions.”

The presidential delegation to Morocco includes Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.

Tinubu also extended appreciation to the players’ families, coaches, supporters, and the Nigerian community in Morocco for their dedication and encouragement.

“You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home,” he charged. “Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you.”

He concluded with hope and anticipation, expressing his eagerness to receive the team and the trophy in Abuja.
