Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a stern warning against assaults on personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), declaring that such acts will be met with strict prosecution and possible jail terms.
The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, made the declaration on Tuesday during the official flag-off of the Second Lagos Traffic Conference, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, in celebration of LASTMA’s 25th anniversary.
Condemning the rising cases of violence against traffic officers—some of which have resulted in deaths—Sanwo-Olu described the trend as “totally unacceptable.”
“We will not condone any form of violence against our traffic officials. Attacking LASTMA personnel is a criminal offence and will be treated as such,” the governor stated.
He also paid heartfelt tribute to LASTMA officers who lost their lives while on duty, either due to mob violence or reckless drivers involved in hit-and-run incidents. He called their deaths a painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger protection of traffic personnel and greater public cooperation.
Themed “Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations,” the conference gathered stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for improving traffic management and road safety across the state.
