The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the controversial demolition of a property reportedly owned by the brother of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the government described Obi’s allegations as unverified, politically motivated, and capable of misleading the public.
“The Lagos State Government is compelled to address the recent allegations made by Mr. Peter Obi regarding the demolition of a property belonging to his brother,” the statement read. “We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other agency of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition.”
The statement further quoted Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, the Special Adviser on eGIS & Urban Development, who oversees LASBCA, as confirming that the agency had no involvement in the incident.
Expressing concern over the timing and nature of the accusation, especially with local government elections approaching, the government said it was “disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts.”
While reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, Omotoso stated that anyone found guilty of unlawful acts—regardless of status or affiliation—would be held accountable in accordance with due process.
To further clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, the state government has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahun Owodunni Oki (FNIA), to launch a full investigation through LASBCA.
“The investigation will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and ensure that any necessary actions are taken,” Omotoso added.
The Lagos State Government concluded by urging the public to disregard the claims and restate its dedication to transparency, inclusivity, and the safety of all residents, regardless of political affiliation.
