The newly deployed Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Benue State, Aminu Idris, has officially assumed office, pledging the Commission’s commitment to conducting credible, transparent and inclusive elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, Idris assured residents that the Commission would uphold its constitutional mandate with fairness, professionalism and integrity, stressing that every eligible Nigerian must be given the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

The REC described the media as a critical partner in strengthening democracy, noting that accurate reportage and public enlightenment remain vital in promoting voter confidence and awareness of the Commission’s activities.

He also highlighted the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise, revealing that the process had entered its third and final phase. Idris urged all eligible residents who are yet to register to take advantage of the exercise before its closure.

On the issue of restored state constituencies, the REC disclosed that the exercise had already been completed in four out of the five affected local government areas in the state.

Idris further reassured the people of Benue State of INEC’s readiness to continue delivering transparent and credible electoral processes in line with democratic principles and the rule of law.
