Viral Video Sparks Outrage Over Alleged Violent Chants by Izala Volunteer Group

A video has surfaced online showing some members of the Agaji volunteer group of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), popularly known as Izala, chanting lyrics that appear to call for armed attacks on people in Enugu and Jos.

The footage, which gained attention on social media, particularly X, on Sunday, shows a group of young men dressed in brown uniforms and blue berets, reportedly associated with the Islamic organisation’s Agaji volunteer wing.

In the video, one of the men leads a chant that references obtaining an AK-47 rifle to attack people described as “infidels” in Enugu and Jos.

The chant includes lyrics suggesting that the individual should be given an AK-47 to travel to Enugu and open fire on people gathered for Sunday worship.

The singer subsequently repeats the reference to obtaining an AK-47, this time mentioning Jos, and chants about killing more people he describes as infidels before referring to the activity as “the training.”

The footage has sparked reactions on social media, with concerns raised over the possibility of religiously motivated violence and threats to the safety of residents in the affected cities.

However, the exact date and location where the video was recorded have not been independently verified. It is also unclear whether the individuals featured in the footage were officially acting on behalf of JIBWIS or whether the organisation has responded to the video.

The circumstances surrounding the recording and the context of the chants remain unclear.

The development has renewed concerns about inflammatory rhetoric and the potential for religious tensions to escalate into violence in parts of the country.
