‘Tinubu Must Go’: Yobe Youths Protest Economic Hardship, Insecurity in Potiskum

Hundreds of youths on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State, calling for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and what they described as poor governance.

The protest, tagged “Tinubu Must Go,” coincided with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and saw demonstrators march through the Tsohowar Kasuwa area of Potiskum carrying placards and flags of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The protesters said the President’s Independence Day broadcast failed to adequately address the challenges confronting Nigerians, particularly rising poverty, insecurity and unemployment.

Speaking to journalists, one of the protesters, who asked not to be named, said the demonstration was an expression of their constitutional right to freedom of speech.

“We came out today to express our fundamental rights, freedom of speech. We are suffering from this government. People are dying due to insecurity, poverty and unemployment in the land,” the protester said.

Another participant, who identified with the opposition, said the youths were concerned about the state of the Nigerian economy and the education sector.

The protesters also accused the government of failing to adequately address hunger, insecurity and what they described as bad governance since 2023.

An eyewitness, Malam Gambo, said the youths took to the streets to demand improved leadership and urgent action to address the challenges facing Nigerians.

The demonstration was reportedly peaceful and orderly, with a significant number of young men and women participating in the protest.
