The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has reiterated that he is acting as a neutral father figure to all politicians seeking elective office in 2027, showing no favouritism toward any candidate or party.
The monarch made the statement on Monday while hosting the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, at his palace in Sokoto.
The NDC delegation was accompanied by the party’s Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsu Haido, along with other party officials. The visit was part of a broader series of political consultations with traditional and community leaders across the country.
It came two weeks after a delegation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, led by Director-General Senator Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari, paid a similar visit to the Sultan on September 14. That delegation included Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu and his counterparts from Kebbi and Zamfara states.
In a statement issued by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s media team, the palace confirmed that the September 28 reception was consistent with the monarch’s stated commitment to remaining an impartial figure to all Nigerians pursuing political office in 2027.
The visit forms part of a pattern of engagement between the Sultanate and major political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections, as candidates continue to seek the blessing and counsel of traditional rulers across the country.
