The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has pushed back against the All Progressives Congress (APC), rejecting claims that some of its members from Jigawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Zamfara states have crossed over to the ruling party.
In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the individuals paraded by the APC as defectors hold no recognized position within the opposition party and have no legitimate claim to ADC membership.
“These people are not our candidates,” the party stated firmly, challenging the APC to name the specific ADC positions the alleged defectors held, the constituencies they represented, and the timeframe of their tenure.
The ADC accused the APC of fabricating political credentials for the sake of a media spectacle, arguing that while the ruling party is free to welcome anyone at its secretariat, it has no right to misrepresent such individuals to the public as ADC officials without substantiating evidence.
“The APC cannot assemble random individuals at its secretariat, confer imaginary ADC credentials on them, and then announce their defection,” Abdullahi said.
The party also took aim at the APC’s justification for the alleged defections — that the newcomers were drawn by the administration’s development strides in Northern Nigeria. The ADC dismissed this narrative, pointing instead to soaring food prices, worsening insecurity, and mounting economic hardship as the realities facing Nigerians in the region.
“Nigerians are asking for evidence of better lives; the APC is manufacturing photographs and congratulating itself,” the statement read.
The ADC concluded by insisting that political claims must be backed by verifiable records, urging the APC to produce concrete proof that the individuals in question were indeed ADC candidates or officeholders before claiming their defection.
