Tinubu, Atiku hail Super Falcons despite loss to England

Despite their removal from the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have praised the Super Falcons for doing Nigeria proud.

The Super Falcons were eliminated from the tournament after losing to the Three Lionesses of England in the Round of 16 on Monday at Brisbane Stadium in Queensland, Australia.

Both teams played a goalless draw during regulation time, and when the game entered extra time, Lauren James was shown a red card for an unnecessary stamp on Michelle Alozie.

Despite being down one player, England held on for the entire duration of extra time before defeating Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

Tinubu and Atiku took to Twitter after the game to praise the Nigerian women for overcoming all difficulties to reach the knockout stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which they lost gallantly.

“I must commend the effort put in by our Super Falcons @NGSuper_Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” President Tinubu said on Twitter.

“Your outstanding performance did not go unnoticed, regardless of the outcome. You did Nigeria proud on the international stage!”

Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate for 2023, stated he has no remorse over skipping breakfast for the game. “We may have lost to England in a penalty shootout, but the @NGSuper_Falcons have every reason to hold their heads high,” he tweeted.
