Doctor’s death: Lagos suspends LASIAMA GM, sacks facility managers

On Sunday, August 6, 2023, the Lagos State government fired and banned the facility administrators of the General Hospital, Odan, where the medical doctor, Vwaere, died in an elevator accident.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Olumide Sogunle, on the report of the panel of inquiry formed to investigate the incident, the state government also stated that the General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) will be suspended immediately.

According to the statement, the facility managers’ activities and reporting lines have been reformed to incorporate hospital management directly.

“We have handed over the installation and maintenance contractors to the police for further investigation and likely prosecution if they are found culpable. The police will also investigate anyone else that might be negligent. Engineers are working to unravel why all the safety devices of the elevator failed at the same time. All our staff are fully insured. We have informed our life insurance providers about this incident.

“The Lagos Safety Commission has been directed to immediately carry out an audit of all elevators in public offices. This is besides the usual safety arrangements that have always existed.”
