Sowore Sues DSS, Seeks N5 Billion Over Alleged Court Assault and Forced Removal

0

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has dragged the Department of State Services (DSS), its Director-General Tosin Ajayi, and Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to court, demanding N5 billion in damages over an alleged assault and forcible removal from the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suit, filed on October 13, 2026, and marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2480/2026, also names DSS Deputy Director Benjamin Bulus, who Sowore claims led the operation against him.

The case stems from an incident on June 22, 2026, shortly after Justice Mohammed Garba Umar ordered that Sowore be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending determination of his application to stay execution of an order revoking his bail, alongside a bench warrant issued against him.

According to the court filings, while Sowore was still awaiting correctional centre officials to take him into custody, armed DSS operatives — some of them hooded — stormed the fourth floor of the court building. He alleges the operatives accosted and assaulted him before forcibly dragging him down to the basement of the complex against his will.

Sowore is asking the court to declare the DSS’s actions illegal and unconstitutional, arguing they violated his fundamental rights to dignity and personal liberty.
