The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the sacked local government chairmen and councillors in Osun State, who were elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), to abandon any hope of reclaiming their positions.
In a statement released on Monday, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stressed that the fate of the ousted officials had been sealed by the Court of Appeal judgment, which nullified their election as unconstitutional. The court had earlier ruled that former Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s move to install the officials was illegal, as it failed to comply with the provisions of the law regarding electoral processes.
Ologunagba accused the APC of attempting to destabilize the state through “misrepresentations, vituperations, violence, and killings” in a desperate bid to create chaos. He called on the Inspector General of Police to hold APC leaders accountable for the violence that reportedly led to the death of some youths.
“The APC should accept reality and stop resorting to self-help. Their misfortune is self-inflicted due to their blatant disregard for constitutional provisions and electoral laws,” Ologunagba said.
The PDP spokesman further criticized the APC for allegedly dragging the office of the President into the matter in a bid to attract public sympathy. He reminded the opposition party that Nigeria practices a federal system of government with distinct powers allocated to each tier, urging them to respect the judiciary’s decision.
“Having been roundly rejected in the July 16, 2022, governorship election, the APC should have known that their actions were bound to fail. Their refusal to follow legal procedures for local government elections made their case irreparable,” he added.
The PDP reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the rule of law in Osun State, urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
