A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has dismissed the political relevance of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing him as “inconsequential” ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Okonkwo made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, shortly after his appointment as the spokesperson for the ADC’s 2027 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
When asked about his position on Obi and his role in the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls, the former Nollywood actor said he was focused on “contenders” rather than “pretenders.”
“I have just been appointed the spokesperson of Atiku Abubakar, so Obi is inconsequential in whatever he is doing in his life. May we proceed to talk about more important issues?
“I want to talk about contenders in 2027. I don’t want to talk about pretenders. Can you bring down somebody who is already down?” he said.
Okonkwo’s comments came hours after Atiku Abubakar formally announced him as his official spokesperson for the 2027 presidential campaign under the ADC, a development that further signals the party’s preparations for the next general election.
The remarks are expected to intensify political debate within the opposition, particularly amid ongoing discussions about alliances and the prospects of opposition candidates in the 2027 presidential race.
