The Osun State Government has deposed the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede, with immediate effect following his conviction in the United States over COVID-19-related fraud.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, who said the decision was reached after due consultation, legal review, and approval by the State Executive Council.

According to the government, the action was taken in line with the provisions of the Osun State Chiefs Law, as amended, and other relevant legal frameworks regulating traditional institutions in the state.

Alimi stated that Oba Oloyede, who was convicted by a United States court in 2025 for offences related to COVID-19 fraud, is currently serving a prison sentence.

As part of the directive, all instruments of authority previously issued to the monarch, including his staff of office, have been withdrawn. Consequently, the stool of the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu has been declared vacant pending the commencement of succession processes.

“The government will, in due course, outline the process for succession in line with established customary and legal procedures,” the statement added.

Security agencies have been directed to maintain law and order in Ipetumodu, while residents, kingmakers, and other stakeholders were urged to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.

Ipetumodu serves as the administrative headquarters of Ife North.
