The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, has described the current state of party organisational politics in Nigeria as the worst in the country’s democratic history.
Amadi made the remarks on Sunday during a live interview on Arise Television while reacting to the primary elections conducted by various political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the level of confusion and internal crisis currently rocking the political space is far worse than what was witnessed during the 2023 election cycle.
“This is the worst we have had in party organisational politics in Nigeria. In 2023, we had crises here and there, but it wasn’t at this level,” Amadi said.
He noted that political parties entered the 2023 primaries with clearer structures and identities, unlike the uncertainty currently dominating the political landscape.
“We went into the primaries with clarity. PDP was PDP, APC was APC. We didn’t have the confusion we have now,” he added.
Amadi also spoke on the ongoing transition to direct primaries, describing it as both challenging and progressive for Nigeria’s democracy.
“The second issue we have now is the transition to direct primaries. There are two ways to look at it. We are making progress. No matter how damaged these processes are, at least there’s a process,” he stated.
His comments come amid growing concerns over internal wranglings, disputed delegates’ lists, parallel congresses, and allegations of manipulation in several political parties ahead of the next general elections.
