Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has taken a swipe at members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who have recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of abandoning principles in pursuit of power.
Speaking on AIT’s Focus Nigeria on Thursday, the Benue South senator remarked that the trend of defections from the PDP to the APC is less about ideology and more about political survival and self-interest.
“There will come a time when the real reasons behind these defections will be clear to Nigerians,” Moro said. “Many don’t want to remain outside the corridors of power. They believe that in the opposition, they can’t get what they want.”
His comments follow a wave of high-profile defections, including former PDP vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, all PDP members of the House of Representatives from Delta State, and three PDP senators from Kebbi State.
Moro also referenced a past comment by an APC chieftain who once said, “if you defect to APC, your sins are forgiven.” He noted that this perception might explain the political exodus.
“Some of the people moving now have skeletons in their closets and believe joining APC offers political cleansing,” he said. “But is that good for Nigeria’s democracy? Is it good for our political growth that people move from one party to another without accountability?”
He questioned the erosion of political values, arguing that elected officials owe their mandates to the party platform under which they were voted in.
“Where have principles gone? Where are the values? You were elected on one party’s ticket, and then you switch sides claiming it’s for your constituency. Is that really true?”
Moro’s remarks come amid growing public debate over the integrity of Nigeria’s political class and the stability of party politics in the country.
