In a surprising policy shift, the United States has joined Russia in voting against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war on Ukraine.
The Ukrainian and European-backed resolution, aimed at de-escalating the conflict and urging a peaceful resolution, was adopted on Monday with 93 votes in favor. Despite the majority support, both the US and Russia opposed the measure.
According to CNN, this marks a significant departure from the longstanding US stance on the conflict. The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies talks with Moscow in an effort to end the war.
Reports also highlight that President Donald Trump has increased pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Notably, the US introduced a rival resolution that omitted key language, failing to label Russia as the aggressor or recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The US is expected to present the same draft at the UN Security Council later on Monday.
