Bayelsa State— Suspected vandals have reportedly breached the 24-inch Ogboinbiri/OB-OB gas pipeline, a key energy infrastructure owned by Oando Energy Plc, in the deep swamp region of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The damaged facility, located between Angiama and Angiamagbene communities, has raised serious concerns over economic sabotage and environmental hazards. While the exact timing of the attack remains unclear, the Bayelsa State Government has strongly condemned the incident, vowing swift action to apprehend those responsible.

In a statement on Friday, Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, described the act as a threat to economic stability and public safety.

“This act of economic sabotage will not be tolerated. The government is working closely with security agencies to track down the perpetrators and prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.

The commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around critical infrastructure, stressing that the destruction of national assets leads to revenue losses at all levels of government while posing significant environmental and health risks.

“The exposure of natural gas and petrochemicals can have grave health implications for citizens. We call on our youth to shun destructive activities and instead collaborate with the government in building a peaceful and prosperous state,” she added.

The Bayelsa government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and fostering an environment conducive to investment and economic growth.
