Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, ushering in a new chapter for the historic Yoruba kingdom. The announcement, made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Friday, followed a rigorous selection process led by the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of Oyo.

According to Oyelade, Owoade’s selection emerged after “extensive consultations and traditional divinations,” cementing his position as the rightful heir to the throne.

“This monumental decision reflects the wisdom of the Oyomesi and Governor Makinde’s commitment to preserving Oyo’s rich cultural heritage,” Oyelade stated.

Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, emphasized the significance of the appointment in resolving the disputes that arose following the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.

“This decision puts an end to the socio-legal controversies that have lingered since the transition of Oba Adeyemi. We call on the people of Oyo State to rally behind the new Alaafin and celebrate this historic occasion,” Ojo remarked.

The government expressed optimism that Prince Abimbola Owoade’s reign would herald an era of peace, unity, and prosperity for the Oyo Kingdom, urging citizens to support the newly crowned monarch in his journey as a custodian of Yoruba culture and traditions.

The announcement marks a pivotal moment in the storied history of Oyo Kingdom, with hopes running high for a prosperous reign under Alaafin Owoade.
