The presidency has criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his remarks on the recent tragic stampedes in Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra States, which claimed multiple lives.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, accused Obi of exploiting the tragedies for political gains. Dare, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), described Obi’s statements as lacking statesmanship and decency.
“When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi,” Dare wrote. “His recent comments on the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo States lack statesmanship and decency, even as he clings to the fading echoes of his much-vaunted political victory. This attempt to score cheap political points falls flat.”
Dare emphasized that in moments of national tragedy, leaders should act responsibly and provide support, citing President Tinubu’s immediate cancellation of engagements, expression of profound sadness, and directive for an investigation as an example of true leadership.
The stampedes, which have shocked the nation, began on Wednesday when over 40 children lost their lives during a tragic incident at a children’s fair in Ibadan, Oyo State. Another stampede occurred on Saturday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja, resulting in the death of 10 people. A similar tragedy unfolded in Okija, Anambra State, during the distribution of rice palliatives, leaving several dead.
Reacting to the incidents, Peter Obi attributed the stampedes to systemic failures within Nigeria, sparking backlash from the presidency.
The government has pledged to investigate the tragedies and address the underlying issues to prevent future occurrences.
