Peter Obi: EFCC should channel energy on budget padding, undisclosed subsidy payment not Bobrisky

In a recent interview on Arise Television, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to focus its efforts on significant issues like alleged budget padding and undisclosed fuel subsidy payments rather than arresting celebrities such as Bobrisky.

Obi criticized the EFCC’s recent actions, including the arrest of Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, for currency abuse, labeling these matters as “minor issues.” He emphasized that the EFCC should prioritize more pressing concerns that have substantial impacts on the nation’s economy.

“If it is not budget padding today, it would be undisclosed subsidy payment, inflated contracts, and all sorts of things,” Obi stated. “These are issues I want our agencies like EFCC to start dealing with but not arresting Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest. Our agencies should face budget padding squarely, not arresting Bobrisky because he dressed like a woman and spent N500 notes.”

Obi’s comments come in the wake of allegations of discrepancies in the 2024 budget. Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, claimed in March that the National Assembly approved a budget of N25 trillion, while President Bola Tinubu signed off on N28.7 trillion. Additionally, there have been claims that President Tinubu reinstated part of the fuel subsidy, which was officially removed on May 29, 2023, a claim the presidency has denied.
