The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its commitment to reclaim more governorship positions and restore its power at the national level in the 2027 elections, citing widespread economic hardship and dissatisfaction with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as driving forces for its resurgence.
This declaration was made by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) during a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his residence in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, on Sunday. The party’s National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, spoke on behalf of the NWC, emphasizing the growing discontent across the country.
“The disenchantment across the country is palpable,” Yayare remarked. “PDP will produce more governors in 2027 because Nigerians are yearning for change. If we do not take over the leadership of the country, it could mark the end of democracy in Nigeria.”
He underscored the party’s position as the only credible opposition force capable of challenging the APC, citing the intense public frustration caused by hunger and poverty. “The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for PDP’s return,” he added. “The APC cannot even campaign without facing public outrage. Nigeria is in your hands – we need your support to salvage this country.”
In a bid to fortify its position, the NWC revealed plans to visit PDP-governed states, urging party governors to unite and strategize effectively ahead of the next general election. The visit also carried a message of condolence for the loss of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Jituboh and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to re-establishing itself as a viable leadership alternative for Nigeria, stressing that the respect for party unity and its governors would be central to their strategy.
Governor Douye Diri, in his response, called for unity among PDP governors, urging them to prioritize collective progress over personal interests. “Consensus-building should always be our first option for resolving issues. Running to the courts at every disagreement weakens us,” he warned. He also emphasized the need for internal discipline and loyalty to the party, suggesting that any member who felt bigger than the party should leave.
Diri further advocated for a broader coalition that would challenge APC dominance, emphasizing that the PDP must position itself as a “mega party” capable of leading Nigeria toward a better future. “Our focus should be on strengthening the PDP as a beacon of hope for Nigeria,” he concluded. “Together, we can restore this nation.”
