Two Ondo-based political groups, the Ese-Odo Progressive Forum and the Ondo State Democratic Vanguard, have condemned recent criticisms directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore.
At a press conference in Akure on Monday, the groups, represented by their convener, Comrade Olusegun Victor, and Akintunde Sowore, described Sowore’s remarks as “baseless and malicious.” They alleged that his attacks were politically motivated and aimed at destabilizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Sowore, who was recently arrested and arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force, has insisted that Egbetokun’s continued stay in office is illegal, arguing that his tenure expired in 2024. The activist has since labeled the IGP as “illegal.”
In response, the Ondo-based groups stated that the attacks were being orchestrated by “desperate politicians and politically exposed officers” within the police force, seeking to create instability in the country.
“We, the members of the Ese-Odo Progressive Forum, in partnership with the Ondo State Democratic Vanguard, have gathered today to respond to the baseless and malicious attacks on the Inspector General of Police by Mr. Omoyele Sowore,” the statement read.
They urged Sowore and his supporters to reconsider their stance, stating that their actions undermine national security and tarnish the reputation of Ondo State, particularly the people of Ese-Odo Local Government Area.
“We stand by our security forces and leadership and will continue to support the efforts of IGP Kayode Egbetokun and the Nigerian Police Force in ensuring a safer country for all,” the groups added.
