The Ogun State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with organizations, civil society groups, and women’s rights advocates to enact laws aimed at eradicating gender-based violence in the state.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, gave this assurance on Monday while hosting a coalition of women’s groups at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The coalition, led by the First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, included representatives from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), civil society organizations, and other non-governmental organizations focused on women and children’s welfare.

Elemide pledged the Assembly’s readiness to domesticate international human and gender-based rights laws, aligning with recommendations from the recent International Legislative Dialogue. He highlighted the state administration’s unwavering support for policies and programs designed to protect women and girls.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, the First Lady emphasized the significance of the 16 Days of Activism, an annual campaign to raise awareness about gender-based violence. She commended the Assembly for its efforts, particularly the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, which she described as a critical step in safeguarding the rights of women and children.

The First Lady also lauded the administration’s proactive approach to implementing policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of women and girls, further solidifying Ogun State’s stance against gender-based violence.

The event was attended by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, alongside other stakeholders advocating for the protection and empowerment of vulnerable groups in the state.
