The Federal Government has entered into landmark partnerships with Siemens Healthineers and Abbott Laboratories to kickstart the local manufacturing of hospital equipment, a move aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported medical devices and strengthening its healthcare system.

The government signed two key letters of intent with Siemens Healthineers, in collaboration with Nigerian partner Tanit Medical Engineering, and Abbott Laboratories GmbH. This initiative will foster the local production of essential medical equipment, enhancing access to high-quality healthcare services across Nigeria.

In a statement issued by Alaba Balogun, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), Abdu Mukhtar, represented the Federal Government during the signing ceremony in Abuja. Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, was also present.

Pate expressed gratitude to Mukhtar and his team for attracting key investors to the country and highlighted an Executive Order that offers valuable incentives for investors in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Mukhtar underscored that these partnerships reflect PVAC’s dedication to reducing import reliance and ensuring greater access to medical devices in Nigeria. He called on all stakeholders to support the initiative, which aims to advance healthcare, improve outcomes, and unlock the full potential of the nation’s healthcare value chain.

Siemens Healthineers’ Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, Kevin Massoudi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing diagnostic services in Nigeria, emphasizing the nation’s leadership role in health innovation across Africa.

Similarly, Dr. Rabah El Menshawy, Vice President at Abbott Laboratories GmbH, praised the partnership as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary leadership in shaping Nigeria’s healthcare future. Abbott’s collaboration aims to help Nigeria achieve its goal of eliminating HIV infections by 2030, aligning with its broader mission to promote health equity and improve access to essential diagnostics.

Both companies believe that the local production of diagnostic solutions will not only improve healthcare delivery but also create employment opportunities and contribute to the Nigerian economy through job creation, capacity building, and knowledge transfer.
