Lagos State Intensifies Fight Against Noise Pollution Ahead of Festive Season

0

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to tackling noise pollution, especially during the festive Yuletide season and beyond, in a bid to safeguard public health and ensure environmental sustainability.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, alongside the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, unveiled measures aimed at curbing excessive noise levels across the state.

Wahab emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution, acknowledging the increased activities and heightened celebrations typical of the season. He stated, “We must prioritize the health and well-being of Lagos residents by reducing noise pollution.”

To enforce compliance, the state has inaugurated a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution. This task force, comprising the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, is tasked with monitoring, arresting, and prosecuting violators of noise regulations.

The commissioner outlined specific guidelines for establishments such as worship centers, nightclubs, lounges, and bars. These venues are now required to obtain permits from LASEPA for public events involving amplified sound. Furthermore, all events must be held within soundproofed and enclosed spaces to minimize noise impact on neighboring communities.

Wahab warned of the significant health and environmental risks posed by unregulated noise, reaffirming the government’s stance against such practices.

Looking ahead, Wahab announced that an intensified public awareness campaign on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of a quieter environment will commence in January 2025. The campaign will involve collaborations with key stakeholders, including religious organizations, business owners, entertainers, and event planners, to foster a culture of compliance and sustainability.

In a bid to promote responsibility, the government plans to recognize and reward individuals and organizations that demonstrate exemplary adherence to noise regulations. “This initiative will foster a culture of sustainability and responsibility among residents and organizations,” Wahab stated.

Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their proactive leadership, Wahab assured residents that the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources would continue implementing policies aligned with the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Development Agenda to create a cleaner, quieter, and safer Lagos.

He urged Lagosians to collaborate with the government in achieving a noiseless and peaceful city, thanking the press for their role in amplifying the message.

The commissioner concluded, “Together, we can build a Lagos that prioritizes the health and well-being of its residents, ensuring a sustainable and harmonious environment for all.”
