INEC Debunks May 27 CVR Resumption Date, Urges Public to Disregard Fake Reports

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed circulating reports claiming that it has fixed May 27 as the date for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

In a statement released on Sunday, the electoral body clarified that no date has been set for the resumption of CVR or for the transfer and replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Describing the viral information as “false and anonymous,” INEC urged Nigerians to ignore the report, assuring that any official announcement would be made through its verified communication channels.

“In line with its tradition, the Commission will publicly announce the date for the resumption of the CVR at the appropriate time, the full details of which will also be shared via our official social media platforms,” the statement read.

It will be recalled that earlier in 2024, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, proposed a shift from the sole reliance on PVCs for voter accreditation. He suggested the adoption of computer-generated slips, citing the efficiency of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) introduced in recent elections.
