The Agadagba III and Bounanawei of Ijaw Nation, HRM Dr. Godday Smith, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately caution the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over alleged derogatory remarks against the Ijaw people.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, Dr. Smith warned that continued attacks on the Ijaw Nation would not go unchallenged, emphasizing that Wike’s actions could incite unrest in the Niger Delta.
The traditional ruler urged President Tinubu to relieve Wike of his ministerial position, accusing him of fueling discord within the region and attempting to turn the Niger Delta against the presidency.
“No one insults the Ijaw Nation and goes unpunished,” Dr. Smith stated, demanding that Wike issue an immediate apology, particularly for remarks perceived as disrespectful to elder statesman Edwin Clark, who has yet to be laid to rest.
“Wike’s claim that the Ijaws are a minority in the Niger Delta is not only misleading but also a distortion of reality. He must exercise caution in his statements and focus on resolving his differences with Governor Siminalayi Fubara instead of disrupting the region’s peace,” he added.
As a custodian of Ijaw tradition, Dr. Smith further cautioned Wike to tread carefully, warning that both the gods and the people of the Ijaw Nation would not tolerate further provocation.
