Fuel-Scarcity-Looms-As-NUPENG-Threatens-Nationwide-Strike

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has alerted its members to a potential nationwide strike, which could result in fuel shortages for Nigerians.

In response to what it perceives as agents of the Imo State administration attacking and abusing the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), its president Joe Ajaero, and other labour leaders, NUPENG is threatening to take down its apparatus.

Recall that on Wednesday at the NLC secretariat in Owerri, alleged state-hired goons attacked and brutalized Ajaero and other NLC leaders as well as members of their Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), and some media.

After gathering at the NLC State secretariat to start the planned protest over unresolved labour issues, the thugs allegedly launched an assault on labour leaders and other protestors, smashing cars, injuring people, and taking away valuables like phones, cash, and ATM cards.

Prince Williams Akporeha, the president of NUPENG, threatened to demand a national strike in response to the incident.

He threatened that if the Imo state government does not free the labour leaders who have been detained and attend to the complaints of its employees, NUPENG will launch a nationwide strike.

He said “We condemn with the strongest term the arrest and brutalization of Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero and other labour leaders by the agents of Imo State Government.

“We reject the act of violence and barbarism being unleashed on labour leaders, workers and others. We cannot accept this uncivilised behaviour in a democracy.
