The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has begun compiling a list of retired civil servants who have failed to fully repay housing loans, signaling the start of a major debt recovery initiative.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Head of Information and Public Relations of the Board, Mrs. Ngozi Obiechina. She quoted the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, as saying the move is aimed at reclaiming mortgaged properties from retirees in default, in accordance with loan agreements and public service regulations.
The development follows a recent memo from Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. The memo reminded public servants of the mandatory requirement to obtain a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness to both the FGSHLB and their respective MDA Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Societies as a precondition for retirement.
“In line with Public Service Rule 021002 (p), all public servants must present a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness before they can formally exit service,” Ahmed emphasized.
She further stated that legal action would be taken to repossess properties from defaulters, adding that the board reserves the right to recover assets in line with signed loan agreements.
“The Federal Government will commence the seizure of mortgaged properties belonging to retiring public servants who have failed to complete housing loan repayments. This directive also applies to already retired officers who remain indebted,” Ahmed said.
She urged all affected individuals to urgently regularise their loan status and obtain the required clearance certificate, noting that a compiled list of defaulters would soon be forwarded to relevant regulatory agencies for enforcement.
“The FGSHLB remains fully committed to enforcing compliance and ensuring all outstanding housing loans are recovered through proper legal channels,” she added.
