Farotimi Backs Obi for 2027, Calls for Bold Leadership

Human rights lawyer and political advocate, Dele Farotimi, has reiterated his unwavering support for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election—if the Labour Party candidate decides to run again.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Farotimi stressed that despite the current socio-political climate, Obi remains his preferred candidate based on competence and character.

“If elections where our votes will count were to be held today, I would vote for Peter Gregory Obi—unless someone else comes into the race who I believe can do better,” he said. “If it’s the same lineup as last time, it’s definitely Peter Obi I’m voting for.”

Farotimi, who served as a spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections, acknowledged that while there’s room for Obi to be “a little bolder with his policy platforms,” his integrity and capacity remain unmatched.

He added, however, that his continued support is conditional: “Something drastic has to happen for me to stop supporting him. If he aligns with certain objectionable individuals, that could change things. But outside of that, there’s no one else.”

The lawyer also criticized the premature focus on the 2027 elections, calling it a distraction from the country’s pressing issues.

“I think our discussions of elections today are a disservice to ourselves because we really cannot speak in terms of an election in our current circumstances,” he said.

Farotimi’s consistent backing of Peter Obi, he said, is motivated by his belief in a new and better Nigeria.
