Abuja – May 7, 2025 – The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, played a video recording allegedly showing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), issuing directives that the prosecution claims incited acts of terrorism in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The video, tendered by the Department of State Services (DSS) as evidence, captured Kanu announcing the formation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and urging his followers to “defend their land” against what he described as Fulani domination.
“No Fulani parading as herdsman shall be allowed in our land. If you are an agent of the Fulani, turn your way this evening,” Kanu was heard saying in the broadcast addressed to “the blessed land of Biafra.”
A DSS operative, identified in court as BBB, testified that Kanu’s broadcasts led to violent attacks on police stations and correctional facilities, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of public property.
Led in evidence by prosecuting counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the witness linked the broadcasts to a series of coordinated acts of terrorism in the region.
Despite objections from the defence, the court admitted both the flash drive containing the video and a certificate of compliance as exhibits. Additionally, a letter dated June 17, 2021, authored by former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), accusing Kanu of terrorism, murder, and incitement, was admitted as Exhibit PWF without objection.
Kanu, who was first arrested in 2017 over his secessionist activities, is currently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges.
