CAN Condemns School Closures During Ramadan, Calls Decision Counterproductive

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has criticized the decision by some northern state governments to shut down schools throughout the Ramadan fasting period, describing it as counterproductive and detrimental to education.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, expressed concern over the move, which has been adopted by states including Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, and Bauchi. The association warned that such policies threaten educational continuity, equity, and governance fairness.

According to CAN, the closure of schools at all levels—ranging from nursery to tertiary institutions—could significantly disrupt academic calendars and exacerbate the region’s already high rate of out-of-school children, which stands at an alarming 44% on average.

“The prolonged closure of schools will not only hinder learning but also deepen the education crisis in these states,” CAN stated.

While acknowledging the importance of religious observances, the association expressed disappointment over the lack of stakeholder consultation before implementing the decision. It also pointed to global examples such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where schools remain open during Ramadan with adjusted schedules to accommodate fasting students.

CAN urged northern state governments to reconsider the policy and prioritize inclusive governance that upholds the right to education for all.
