Benue IPAC Chairman Warns Against Alleged Plots for State of Emergency

Makurdi, Nigeria – The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Benue State, Ibrahim Idoko, has called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take proactive measures against any clandestine efforts to instigate a state of emergency in the state.

Speaking to journalists during a Town Hall meeting organized by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, Idoko expressed concerns over alleged plots by certain elements to create conditions that could justify such a move.

Condemning the recent state of emergency imposed on Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara alongside the state assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Idoko described the development as a “dark spot” in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Some individuals are already toying with similar ideas in Benue State. I am aware of this, and I urge Governor Alia to act swiftly to prevent any crisis that could lead to such an outcome,” he warned.

The IPAC chairman also criticized President Tinubu’s decision, cautioning that it sets a dangerous precedent.

“It is surprising that the President would take sides and implement such an unfortunate measure. I hope this does not encourage dangerous thoughts among our young military officers. Frankly speaking, let’s call a spade a spade,” he remarked.

Despite his concerns, Idoko expressed confidence in Nigeria’s democratic resilience, noting that the international community is closely watching the country’s governance.

He further urged President Tinubu to ensure that the emergency rule in Rivers State does not extend beyond the six-month period approved by the National Assembly.

“I pray that the six months pass quickly. While it is unlikely to be reversed, the democratically elected government of Rivers State must be restored, and Governor Fubara should be allowed to perform his duties without interference,” he emphasized.

Additionally, Idoko called for reinforced security measures in Rivers State, acknowledging its volatile nature and the need for stability.

“The security situation in Rivers must be strengthened. We all know how sensitive the state is. I hope both sides learn from this experience and are prepared to work together after the emergency period,” he stated.
