UYO – In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity and compassion, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the widows of fallen soldiers in the state. During the Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day event held in Uyo on Wednesday, the governor announced a donation of N150 million to empower widows of deceased military personnel, alongside an additional N100 million for widows of police and other security agencies.
Governor Eno also unveiled a strategic empowerment initiative through the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development (IbomLED) program to equip the widows with skills and knowledge for sustainable businesses.
“Widows Will Not Walk Alone”
Reassuring the widows, Eno stated, “The widows of our fallen soldiers and those who served this nation diligently will not walk alone. We will stand by you, pray with you, and give you our unwavering support. May the souls of the gallant officers, men, and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces rest in peace.”
He directed the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services to ensure that funds are disbursed promptly and used to enhance the livelihoods of the beneficiaries. He added that both ministries would collaborate to integrate the widows into empowerment programs across local government areas in the state.
“Beyond disbursing funds, we will empower these women with skills to improve or start their trades. Those in need of training will be enrolled in IbomLED,” Eno emphasized.
Tributes and Calls for Unity
Paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the governor commended their patriotism and selflessness in safeguarding the nation. He urged Nigerians to embrace inclusivity, fairness, and unity for national progress.
“We in Akwa Ibom will continue to honor and celebrate the sacrifices of our heroes. Last year, we donated N100 million to widows to ease their pain. This year, we will do even more to assist them and the Nigerian Legionnaire,” he added.
The event culminated in the laying of wreaths by Governor Eno and heads of security agencies in a solemn ceremony honoring the memory of the nation’s fallen heroes.
