Amachree’s reaction comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the circumstances of Abacha’s death following claims contained in his newly released book, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield.
The former DSS officer had recently challenged Abacha’s former Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), to release any available CCTV footage from the late military ruler’s final hours. In the book, Amachree alleged that Abacha died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a sexual encounter in the early hours of June 8, 1998.
Al-Mustapha, however, rejected the account, insisting it was false and urging Nigerians not to believe the claims.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Amachree also faulted Eluemunor’s version of events, accusing the journalist of fabricating details in an attempt to appear knowledgeable about intelligence operations.
“One thing I have to tell you is this: I am not discussing the full investigation, where even the ladies were interrogated when they came to Abuja and the decisions that followed,” he said.
He specifically denied Eluemunor’s claim that he was stationed at the airport to intercept one of the women allegedly involved in the incident.
“Tony Eluemunor got his facts completely wrong. He said I was in charge of the airport, waiting for a girl who was trying to escape. That was not true. I served at the airport years before those events,” Amachree stated.
He also disputed Eluemunor’s claim that he reported to former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor, noting that Ejiofor was his junior officer and never served as Director of Operations at the agency’s national headquarters during his time in service.
“There was no way I would have reported to Mike Ejiofor. He is my junior. I retired before he became a director, and he was never the Director of Operations at the national headquarters,” he said.
Amachree concluded by accusing Eluemunor of inventing stories to impress the public, saying the journalist should focus on writing fictional intelligence novels instead of presenting unverified accounts as facts.
