Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says President Bola Tinubu might never have reached office without the political backing of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Momodu, who serves as Deputy Director-General of the ADC’s Presidential Campaign Media and Communications Directorate, made the claim during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Friday, crediting El-Rufai’s influence as pivotal to Tinubu’s 2023 victory.
He also criticised the bail conditions imposed on El-Rufai, calling them excessively harsh given the former governor’s role in the president’s rise to power.
“El-Rufai is held down not because he has committed any crime. He could have stayed away from the country. He chose to come back to the country. He knew he was going to be arrested, and he was arrested,” Momodu said.
He added that the terms of El-Rufai’s bail were so severe that “even his enemies would wonder why he has to go through such a painful experience at the hands of a government that he helped to midwife.”
Momodu was emphatic that Tinubu owes his presidency in no small part to El-Rufai, stating plainly: “If not for him, I’m sure President Bola Tinubu would not be in office today.”
