The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account.
Amadi, speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, argued that the anti-graft agency lacks the basis to freeze a state government account merely on allegations that public funds could be squandered.
According to him, the government has the right to spend funds appropriated for its operations, while officials can be prosecuted later if evidence of financial wrongdoing is established.
“The EFCC cannot freeze a state government account simply on the fear of squandering or waste. The government has a right to spend its funds.
“Even if there is an allegation of dissipation, officials can still be prosecuted afterward if any wrongdoing is established,” he said.
Amadi said the situation was also raising concerns about possible political interference, suggesting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be using the EFCC to put pressure on Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
He, however, praised EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, describing him as an innovative individual committed to fighting corruption.
“I have met the EFCC Chairman and had conversations with him, and I consider him an innovative person who is committed to fighting corruption.
“For me, this is his first real test, and he must show that he can withstand political pressure. It clearly appeared to be an APC strategy to close in on the Osun State governor,” Amadi said.
