A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his nationwide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Momodu, in a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, said the President’s address turned what should have been a day of celebration into a day of lamentation.

The publisher of Ovation Magazine particularly took issue with Tinubu’s description of Nigeria before his administration as a cancer patient that had been surviving on painkillers.

According to Momodu, Tinubu was expected to stabilise the country rather than worsen its condition.

“My heart bled as you went into the analogy of Nigeria as a cancer patient who merely survived on painkillers before your arrival as a celebrated surgeon,” he said.

He added, “The expectation was that you would stabilise Nigeria and not metastasise it into stage-four cancer.”

Momodu also expressed concern over the country’s economic and security situation, arguing that despite increased revenues and accumulated loans, insecurity and poverty had continued to worsen.

He said politicians had also remained insensitive to the hardship faced by Nigerians.

“Today is supposed to be a day of celebration, but your speech turned it into a day of lamentation,” Momodu wrote.

He further questioned Tinubu’s use of morphine in describing the policies of previous administrations.

“You specifically mentioned morphine as the drug of choice by your predecessors. I’m not sure this analogy was appropriate. At the time you assumed power, Nigeria probably had stage-two cancer, at the worst,” he said.
