A Federal High Court has sentenced a member of the terrorist group Boko Haram to death by hanging for his role in the deadly 2015 bomb attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The court found the convict guilty of participating in the coordinated attacks that claimed several lives and left many others injured, bringing to a close a case that has lingered for more than a decade.
Delivering judgment, the court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the death sentence in accordance with the law.
The 2015 Maiduguri attacks were among a series of violent assaults carried out by Boko Haram at the height of the insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East, resulting in widespread destruction and the loss of civilian lives.
The ruling marks another milestone in the country’s efforts to prosecute individuals linked to terrorism and hold those responsible for acts of violence accountable.
Further details of the judgment are expected to emerge.
