The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has warned personnel of the Nigerian Army against the misuse of social media and other digital platforms, cautioning that unregulated online activities could jeopardize operational security, weaken institutional integrity, and negatively impact ongoing military operations.
The Army Chief also tasked Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) to intensify efforts toward promoting and sustaining the warrior ethos within the ranks, describing it as essential to maintaining combat effectiveness, operational readiness, and mission success across all formations and units of the Nigerian Army.
The charge was delivered on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the First Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2026, held at the JN Garba Hall, Postgraduate School, Old Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
In a statement issued by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the convention, themed “Empowering Regimental Sergeant Majors to Drive Combat Readiness and Professional Excellence,” was described as a strategic platform for professional interaction, operational experience-sharing, and discussions aimed at strengthening leadership capacity, mentorship culture, and regimental standards in line with the Nigerian Army’s transformation drive.
Speaking at the event, Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasized the critical role of RSMs as custodians of discipline, regimentation, and military tradition within the Nigerian Army.
He noted that their influence remains indispensable in boosting troop morale, sustaining operational cohesion, and fostering esprit de corps, especially among personnel deployed in various theatres of operation across the country.
The COAS stressed that instilling a strong warrior ethos among troops is crucial to building resilient, disciplined, and mission-focused forces capable of confronting evolving and asymmetric security threats.
He further urged RSMs to lead by example through the enforcement of responsible digital behavior, improved information discipline, and strict adherence to established communication protocols within their respective units and formations.
