Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has publicly addressed the origins of his wealth, stating that his fortune was built through legitimate business ventures long before his entry into politics.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday, the former Vice President disclosed that his investments span multiple sectors, including logistics, real estate, agriculture, and education.

Atiku, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s wealthiest politicians, is estimated to have a net worth ranging between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion. He emphasized that his financial success predates his political career, insisting that he has never been found culpable of corruption.

“Before I went into politics, I was already in business. I was in oil and gas, logistics, and agriculture. I had investments across several sectors of the economy,” he said.

Reflecting on his early involvement in the formation of the PDP, Atiku noted that he played a significant role in funding the party. He questioned why allegations of corruption did not arise during that period if his wealth had been questionable.

Addressing past scrutiny, Atiku revealed that a panel set up under former President Olusegun Obasanjo investigated him. According to him, the panel included prominent figures such as Nasir El-Rufai and Nuhu Ribadu.

“I waived my immunity and asked them to probe me,” he stated, adding that no wrongdoing was established against him.

Atiku’s remarks come as he positions himself as a leading contender for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling a potential return to the political frontline.
