An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ayekooto Akindele, has alleged that the 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, are quietly acquiring shares in the Dangote Refinery through its recently launched Initial Public Offering (IPO), even as their supporters continue to campaign for the return of fuel subsidy.
Akindele made the allegation in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, while responding to critics of the Bola Tinubu administration.
He claimed a contradiction between the actions of the ADC leaders and the stance of their followers, saying: “Atiku and Amaechi are secretly buying Dangote Refinery shares but their uninformed illiterate followers are shouting ‘Bring back subsidy.’ May we not be foolish in our lives.”
The APC chieftain also took aim at Nigerians in the diaspora who he accused of discouraging their compatriots at home, even as he claimed such Nigerians abroad were themselves investing in the country by purchasing refinery shares.
“Wailers living in the diaspora are making their domestic counterparts here feel hopeless about the country,” he said. “Whereas diaspora wailers are busy investing in Nigeria, rushing to buy the Dangote Refinery shares, those wailers who reside in the same country where Dangote resides are exhibiting traits of hopelessness.”
Akindele’s claims come amid ongoing public debate over fuel subsidy removal and its economic impact on Nigerians. There has been no independent confirmation of the allegation regarding Atiku and Amaechi’s involvement in the Dangote Refinery share offer, and neither the ADC presidential candidate, his running mate, nor their camp has responded to the claim.
