The Borno State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the arrest and detention of five youths in Maiduguri after they were found wearing T-shirts inscribed with the phrase “Tinubu Must Go,” describing the action as a violation of their constitutional right to freedom of expression.
In a statement issued Tuesday night, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Baba Ahmed Mustapha, said the ADC had been informed that security operatives arrested and detained the youths solely on account of the message printed on their clothing.
Mustapha argued that wearing a T-shirt bearing a political inscription amounts to a legitimate expression of political opinion and should not be criminalised, insisting that the youths be released without delay.
He called on the Borno State Commissioner of Police to ensure that officers under his command act professionally and within the bounds of the law, warning against the use of security agencies to suppress dissent.
The ADC further urged civil society groups and other stakeholders to speak out against what it termed an attempt to intimidate citizens for holding and expressing political views critical of the government.
