ADC Defies INEC Uncertainty, Moves Ahead with Congresses Amid Leadership Dispute

0

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention despite ongoing uncertainty over recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated that ADC had already fulfilled all procedural requirements by issuing INEC the mandatory 21-day notice for its planned activities. According to him, the electoral body acknowledged receipt of the notice.

Abdullahi stressed that the party would not suspend its internal processes regardless of INEC’s stance, maintaining that preparations for the congresses and national convention would continue as scheduled.

He also raised concerns about what he described as increasing threats to Nigeria’s democratic space, warning against actions that could undermine political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development comes amid a leadership crisis within the party, following INEC’s removal of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, from its official portal. The commission further stated it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to assume the chairmanship position through legal means.

Reiterating the party’s position, Abdullahi warned against any moves that could restrict voter choice, noting that Nigerians are closely observing developments within the political landscape. He added that ADC remains committed to democratic principles and will proceed with its activities irrespective of external challenges.
