The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from the removal of fuel subsidy and explain how his administration has utilised over $100 billion in borrowed funds since assuming office in 2023.
Obi made the demands in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, following Tinubu’s overnight visit to Akwa Ibom State.
While commending the President for spending a night outside Lagos and Abuja, the former Anambra State governor urged him to extend similar visits to the remaining 33 states to better understand the challenges facing Nigerians.
Obi said the President’s visits should go beyond official engagements and provide opportunities to interact with citizens and explain how public resources have been utilised.
He specifically demanded accountability over the funds reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal, the loans obtained by the federal government, increased tax revenues and additional government earnings.
According to Obi, Nigerians deserve to know the tangible benefits of these revenues, particularly in addressing poverty, education, healthcare, electricity and insecurity.
He questioned how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty under the current administration, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been established.
The NDC presidential candidate also challenged Tinubu to provide an update on improvements in electricity supply, recalling the President’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s power sector.
On security, Obi expressed concern over Nigeria’s continued ranking among countries severely affected by terrorism, insisting that the government must demonstrate measurable progress in protecting lives and property.
He maintained that Nigerians deserved clear explanations on how the resources entrusted to the government had translated into improved living conditions.
Obi added that the Nigeria he envisioned would be built on accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
