Commission sets up dedicated AI division, integrates automated auditing tools into results verification
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Tuesday at the commission’s world press conference and national stakeholders’ forum on preparations for the polls.
He said a dedicated AI division has been established within the commission’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.
“Automated AI auditing tools are being integrated into our results verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework,” Amupitan said, adding that the commission is finalising a policy on human oversight of the technology.
The announcement comes as the commission steps up preparations for the 2027 elections, including the distribution of non-sensitive materials to states.
Amupitan has also identified the collation of results as a major gap in the electoral process and warned the media against declaring privately collated results.
